"New PhDs in 2009! From right to left: me, Yuki Watanabe [I love inflation! on his "PhD T-shirt" (tradition in astronomy department)], Jun Koda [Paul Shapiro's "former" student ("former," because he graduated ;-)), the bullet cluster on his T-shirt], Masa Shoji (4th year), Donghui Jeong (5th year), and Donghui's beloved wife Hyun Sol Park. Here is a photo from last year's my group.

According to the Planck website, the Fight Light Survey is starting today. At the Paris Cosmology conference above, Reno Mandolesi, a PI of the Planck LFI, gave a nice talk on the status update on LFI, and showed a preliminary map of a strip of the sky observed by Planck as of July 24. He then compared Planck's data of a region on the Galactic plane to WMAP's, showing great sensitivty that Planck has achieved for the first few hours (? - I forgot exactly how many hours they have spent on the first strip they observed) of observations. Nice!
